The main things you need to know in Albania before hiring a car

Parking

Parking in Albania can be a challenge, especially in cities like Tirana where space is limited. Drivers often park on the street, sometimes without adhering to regulations. On-street parking is common, and in urban areas, paid parking zones are available. Albania has a lower rate of vehicle theft compared to other European countries, making street parking relatively safe. However, it’s always advisable to familiarize yourself with local parking rules and to use paid parking lots or garages for added security and peace of mind

Car hire with Children

Hiring a car with children in Albania requires planning for safety and comfort. Ensure the rental car is equipped with suitable child seats, adhering to safety regulations. Larger vehicles offer more space for families and luggage. When traveling with kids, consider the duration of drives, as some destinations in Albania can be reached via winding roads. Additionally, it’s important to have entertainment and snacks for children, especially for longer journeys. Always check with the rental company for any additional charges or services for child safety seats and family-friendly vehicles

Best Season

Visiting Albania is most enjoyable during the warmer months, typically from May to September. This period is characterized by sunny weather, perfect for enjoying the country’s beautiful coasts, historical landmarks, and picturesque landscapes. The high season falls in July and August, offering a vibrant cultural atmosphere and numerous festivals, although these months see higher tourist influx. For a quieter visit with cooler but still pleasant weather, the months of May, June, and September are ideal, offering a tranquil environment for exploration.

Required documents

For car rental in Albania, possessing a valid national driver’s license is necessary. It’s often suggested, and sometimes obligatory, to have an International Driving Permit as per the car hire firm’s policies. Identification through a valid passport or a national ID card is a prerequisite. Car rental agencies generally have an age requirement, usually setting the minimum at 21, though this might be higher for specific car categories. For securing the vehicle, a credit card is generally required for the deposit, with some rental services accommodating debit cards. It’s advisable to consult with the car hire company to understand any additional documentation needs or specific terms of their rental agreement.

Driving in Albania

Navigating Albania’s roads is an adventure, marked by diverse terrain. While the main roads are typically well-maintained, expect more challenging conditions on rural and mountainous paths, which are often tight and serpentine. Adhering to local driving laws, such as right-side driving and mandatory seatbelt use, is important. Due to varying driving styles and some local drivers’ lax approach to traffic rules, adopting a defensive driving approach is beneficial. Anticipate unpredictable driving behaviors, particularly in urban centers like Tirana, and exercise extra caution at crossroads and poorly signed areas.

Crossing the border

For a smooth border transition in Albania when using a hired car, having the correct documents and authorization is essential. Make sure to carry your passport, a valid driver’s license, and your rental car contract. Some car hire services might ask for extra documents for trips across borders, so it’s wise to check with your rental provider in advance. Anticipate possible fees at border crossings and verify whether your car rental insurance is applicable for trips outside Albania. It’s also important to be aware of the specific entry rules for neighboring countries, so thorough research prior to your journey is recommended. Border control processes and waiting times can vary, so be prepared for these differences.

I’m unable to send a link as the link will only send it to a homepage. We require a car from the 30th June – 7th July. Pick up in Sarande – drop off in Tirana.

My concern is that on the term and conditions of all of these bookings, it states this
‘ The minimum driving experience is 2 years. The rental company manager has the right to refuse to provide a car for rent at any time if the age and experience of the driver do not meet these requirements.’

PLease can you confirm if that I will definitely not be refused the booking because I have only 1 years driving experience?
